WE WILL FIGHT FOR YOU(R) QUICK & EASY DIVORCE

September 13, 2024

Yes, all of words appeared in the same advertisement for “divorcelawfirms.com.” I didn’t click through to reach the content because the banner headline was so contradictory. But the content does reflect what is often a Janus like approach clients take to separation and divorce. It seems like any divorce should be a fight. Some people relish conflict. Most do not. And experience suggests that many people who entered a law office looking for a spirited conflict end up leaving the divorce or custody litigation process suffering from financial and emotional exhaustion.

In recent years, the quest to do battle has diminished. That is probably a good thing. Suffice to say no one “wins” a divorce and rarely does anyone think they “won” a custody case. The caution here is when lawyers oversell what they can do. If you fight, whether for good reasons or not, there will be no quick/easy divorce. And when shopping for a lawyer, what you want is a person who is settlement minded but not afraid to take a matter to court. Yes, there are fights worth having. But there is much to say for the phrase: “Choose your battles carefully.”
